After weeks of testimony by diverse experts and well over one hundred Vermonters, the VT Right to Know Genetically Modified Food Act (H.722) was passed by the House Agriculture Committee on April 20th. Vermonters made it very clear to their elected officials that they have a right to know what is in the food they eat and feed their families.

But with limited time left in the session, it is now clear that the legislature will not pass the bill this year. We, like you, are frustrated and disappointed, but this does not mean that we will stop our advocacy on this important issue. We are already working to build on everyone’s hard work, and will come back next session with an even stronger bill.

Yestermorrow is offering significant discounts on two upcoming workshops, perfect for Vermont’s agricultural backbone. Woodworking Unplugged: Tools for Growers, May 20-25, is now $600 instead of $800 and Root Cellar Design, May 26-27, is now $220 instead of $320. Call 802-496-5545 or email monica@yestermorrow.org to register!

Root Cellar Design

Root cellars and other means of passive food storage are simple and effective ways to reduce carbon footprints, monthly bills, grid dependency, and increase your food security. In this workshop, participants will learn elements of designing for passive cooling and humidity control, including site selection, design strategies and options, materials pros and cons, thermal mass, ice batteries, raw food considerations, planning crops for food storage, design considerations for different applications, and retrofit opportunities and methodologies.

Woodworking Unplugged: Tools for Growers

Gardens are significant aspects of sustainable architecture and communities, and the construction of the tools needed for good gardening can be built with simple techniques and zero visits to the Home Depot. Join us as Professor Rod Northcutt brings his national Woodworking Unplugged Tour to Yestermorrow for a course linking makers with food culture, and facilitating a perspective that is dear to both groups — making from scratch to truly understand that which is made. We’ll focus on garden and food preparation necessities that can be designed and made using traditional techniques with wood and/or salvaged materials. Potential projects include gardening implements (rakes, dibbers, and hayforks), armatures (trellises and produce cages), and auxiliary systems (worm bins, tumbling composters, hygrometers, water harvesting systems, and sub-irrigation planters). Techniques may include mortise/tenon joints, turning, peg making/peg joining, lashing, green bending, and steam bending. Growers, makers, woodworkers and re-skillers are all welcome.
