New Organic Production Guides

 

The New York State IPM Program recently published new production guides for farmers interested in producing certified organic crops. Four guides focus on fruit crops: apples, blueberries, strawberries, and grapes, and eight guides focus on vegetables: beans, carrots, cole crops, cucumbers & squash, lettuce, peas, potatoes, and spinach. Another guide addresses control of pests of dairy cattle using organic methods. Each guide provides an overall approach for organic production with a focus on biological, mechanical, and cultural controls. Sections on cover crops, resistant varieties, crop rotation, field selection, soil quality and nutrient management all highlight their interrelated qualities and precede specifics on pest management options.

 

The guides were developed with support from the New York State Departmentof Agriculture and Markets’ Organic Development and Assistance Program, and coordinated by the New York State Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Program.  Dozens of professionals at Cornell University and Cooperative Extension provided input on soil fertility recommendations, crop rotations to prevent pests and disease incidence, and specific strategies to address common crop problems. The latest edition of the New England Small Fruit Pest Management Guide is here! This guide is revised every two years. UMass Small Fruit Specialist Sonia Schloemann edits the guide, and specialists from throughout New England review it. The guide covers strawberry, blueberry, brambles, grapes, currants and gooseberries.  It provides good general production information about each crop, and updated information about insecticides, fungicides and herbicides labeled for small fruit crops. The cost 

of the guide is $15.
